This is a lace knit 100% Border Leicester wool shawl.  I bought this fleece raw from a friend of mine.  It came from her ewe named 'Poppy'.  I hand cleaned it for all the little pieces of hay, grass and leaves that sheep get into, then washed it to remove the dirt and lanolin.  Being a bit on the brown side when all that was done, I decided to add a bit of pink dye to the brownish grey and make a nice mauve color.  Well, being a bit of a novice at dying, I used too much color and got plum instead of mauve!  Gee, how terrible...........NOT!  It was lovely and has made several nice hats and this beautiful shawl.  The picture can not pick up the natural variations in the colors that make this shawl unique.  It is 80 inches across the top, and 33 inches long down the middle.  This wool was completely hand cleaned, washed, combed, spun and knit.  Just to get the 5 and a half ounces of yarn, there is almost 60 hours of work.  Then there was the time to knit this lovely piece, and make something you will enjoy for many years.  As with all wool, hand wash only and dry flat.  To open up the lace for the best effect, block or pull out while still wet and as it dries.  Because of the dye, if you use about a teaspoon of vinegar in the wash water, they dye will stay bright and beautiful for many years.
